The National Bank Young Farmer Of The Year
A few months ago nine people from our school went to Hawera to compete in the agrikids competition . It was our first time and we did really well but we didn’t make it to the finals. After the agrikids final and the teenag final there was the National Bank Young Farmer of the Year audition. Six people had to bang in a post, swing a gate and build a fence. Not as easy as it sounds. For some people. Dad has no problem with it but at least four people were struggling to hang the gate on the post. Brad Lewis was definitely not one of tem. He easily banged in the post, put the gate on its hinges and made the fence with obvious skill. He was going to Dunedin to try and be the national bank young farmer of the year.
The final was going to be held in the AMI stadium in Christchurch but was moved to Dunedin because of the earthquake. The final was held over a span of three days. The six competitors had to complete a range of tasks, shearing sheep, running a business and a young farmer competition like the one we have on pet day. They had to paint a fern with a digger ( The paint brush was attached to the bucket) They also had to know a lot about NZ and farming.
The prize was worth $32,000. The prize money was $15,000 and there was Ravensdown fertilizer products, a Honda motorbike and a huge toolkit. There was also a ribbon and a trophy.
Micheal Liley was winning the whole time. In the end he won by thirteen points. Micheal Liley was the 2012 National Bank Young Farmer of the Year!
